Description
This one is a little different than what you are accustomed to seeing from me, and that’s okay because that’s exactly the emotions I wanted to evoke. I will break down the thought and creative process behind this one.
I started off knowing I wanted abstract meets street art with this art piece. This piece was geared toward making a statement about the dark underbelly of human trafficking and the impacts it has on its victims.
A lot of it takes place on the streets and we truly don’t know where or even the people running the operations – kind of like abstract we have to guess what’s going on through our interpretations. I just felt like street art would take this to a different level and a lot of powerful political pieces can be found in graffiti as they use colors and popular places to get their point across. I placed the lines over the eyes and mouth because the victims are scared and ordered to never talk about what they have been through or seen. They live in perpetual fear and I wanted to represent that it is okay to be brave by speaking out. The butterflies represent the freedom to fly, just like the rescued victims. They are moving upward as if they are being released. You will then see some ovals that represent a chain. If you look closely that chain has been cut showing another sense of freedom. I hinted in a barcode with the words Not for Sale to make sure the viewer knows where I am going with this piece and what I stand against. Flowers were then added to represent the chance to grow on behalf of the victims.
I wish there was a way to rescue every woman or human being who is a victim of this horrible industry. This is a constant burden on my heart and I wanted to create a piece that signifies the help people want to give, the new chances the rescued victims receive, and the inspiration of hope, promises, freedom, and the love to look forward to.
